Dead Neighbors v2.2.7. Possibly last patch.
I think this will be one of my last patches. Someone once asked me what the cut off point is, when is the game considered done and I think this is it. I may or may not add in headshots for zombies. I got a few more Dead Neighbors games in the works.
Dead Neighbors 2
Dead Neighbors 2 is going to be way more cinematic. You're on an alien planet after crash landing in your fighter. You have to scavenge enough supplies to create a radio beacon to let the orbiting ship know where you are. To accomplish this, you have to reach other downed fighters. Each one is equipped with a survival module that has power to replicate stuff you need so each ship you find you'll ahve to make the decision to get health, ammo or upgrades to your gear/weapons. The advantage to being on a planet is it takes up way less room than a city, so I'll have more space for enemies and other stuff. Also I had like ten enemies I wanted to add to Dead Neighbors 1 that I'm saving for DN2. No, I'm not just reusing the same enemies. While there are some basics, like spiders and stalkers, I have a lot more complicated and terrifying things planned for you, as well as weather hazards and biomes. I'm also looking to tell some of the story behind the series in this and I've been experimenting with cutscenes. I've initially been afraid of them as you have to pause gameplay to show stuff and pausing enemies can make them glitch. I'll figure something out though. Also I wanted each ship to have journals from the pilot that have clues to where extra goodies are. I really wanted to push survival horror to its limits. So imagine you need to save materials to build the final radio but you use those same resources to survive so you get rewarded by saving your stuff. I wanted it to be a decently wide map, like 5x as wide as the city but super long with complex areas, each with their own pluses and minuses. some with unique enemies as well.
Dead Neighbors: The Outer Rim
You operate a mining truck. It has a lot of complex systems you'll need to use to avoid enemies, as combat is extremely ineffective but not exactly 0. You'll have to conserve power as you can only refill at supply depots. This game is both exciting for me but holy crap the truck is extremely complicated programming-wise.
Dead Neighbors patch:
- Your shots spawn from the camera, so when you back into a wall and your camera is inside of it, your shots are hitting it and not what's in front of you. By setting the bulelt spawnpoint forward by a foot, I've fixed this issue.
- In the last patch, I was trying to figure out why Devour was malfunctioning. Not sure what was going on but hey I fixed it...allegedly.
- Street signs would morph to a new sign when close. There's something claled an LOD (length of detail). You ever sene buildings slowly morph into higher resolution as you get close? That's an LOD. When you're super far away, you don't need to see that object in as much detail so LODs swap between graphics depending on how far you are to save on rendering. ANYTHING can ahve an LOD and all you do is tell it what graphic to swap to at what distance. The city I'm using has some funky LODS, like I can't fathom needing to swap the entire shape of the sign at twenty feet but whatever. I fixed it.
- I wasn't a fna of all the zombies using the exact same audio when running. It sounds like a minigun shooting tap dancers. Now each footstep is randomly chosen from 20 slightly different footsteps to give them a lot of variety when they run as a horde.
- I've considered adding headshots here soon but I have to add in a different running animation as the ones they use right now make it too easy to land a headshot. However I wanted to fix the current round of bugs before I add new content as things historically break when I add new shit, even whene verything seems easy peasy.
